Cliff Cunningham, an average man in his mid thirties, decides to visit his wife’s ex-husband, Richard Lauren. Cliff’s wife, Chris, divorced Mr. Lauren so she could marry Cliff several years ago. Mr. Lauren was also paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident around the time Chris confessed her affair to him. Cliff is happy with his new wife but is not totally at peace with the past. He goes to visit Mr. Lauren with the hopes of apologizing to him and resolving issues from the past.
Soon after visiting Mr. Lauren, Cliff learns that he was in part responsible for his accident. Cliff becomes tortured by even more guilt, but Mr. Lauren is very friendly to him and tries to get him to forget their past. Cliff cannot believe that Mr. Lauren is not angry with him and insists that he be truthful about his feelings.
Mr. Lauren confesses that he did once hate Cliff, and even hired men to kill him. Mr. Lauren is reluctant to elaborate but Cliff demands that he tell him why he called off the murder. Mr. Lauren tells him that when the men he hired were following him, they discovered that Chris had three lovers. Cliff thinks this is ridiculous and believes Mr. Lauren is lying. Mr. Lauren becomes offended by a comment Cliff makes and vows to prove this to him.
Posing as Chris's uncle, Mr. Lauren calls all three men and invites them to his house. Cliff reluctantly agrees to pretend he is a visiting neighbor and observe each visit. As each lover arrives, the situation becomes stranger until the surprising truth is revealed.
