I attended the 2007 International Mystery
Writers' Festival in Ownesboro, Kentucky in June of 2007.
My screenplay, Slip, was performed three times
during the festival. I also did several book signings in promotion
of my novel, The
Camera Eye,
and conducted a Master's Class titled "Path to Publication."
 I've been
fortunate enough to see a lot of my work performed live onstage, but
I've never seen anything quite like this. First of all, Slip is a
screenplay, which is of course meant for film, not live theatre. But
this very unique performance was done in old-style radio format. The
actors were onstage performing their parts, but they stood next to
each other in front of microphones. With the help of a sound effects
team, they put on an amazing performance that I will never forget.
The director and some of the performers are from a well known comedy
troupe that's been around since the sixties called Firesign
Theatre. I was lucky enough to have David
Ossman, who was the voice of Cornelius the Ant in A Bug's
Life, direct my play,
and to have Phil Proctor act in it. Phil was the Drunken French
Monkey in Eddie Murphy's Doctor Doolittle and also did voices
in Toy Story and Monster Inc. The cast also included many fine
actors (and great people too) from the Owensboro area
including John Page, Jennifer Elder, Todd Reynolds, and Jouhanna
Vasquez.
